Diaconate Ordination Pilgrimage – Day One

Yesterday we flew out of Will Rogers International Airport In Oklahoma City on our overnight flight to Rome. Like usual, we enjoyed in-flight movies, dinner, and breakfast aloft. We arrived in Rome this morning. I was surprised, this time, we were rushed through to Passport Control and had to regroup and find each other at the baggage carousel. On every previous pilgrimage, I was able to gather everyone up as they deplaned, and we headed to Passport Control together. Alas, not this time. The airport staff were quite adamant about scuttling us through, as in, very pushy.

Once together again, we headed out of Baggage Claim and located Lionel, our tour director, and headed for the coach. On our way to the hotel, we passed the Roman Forum, the Arch of Constantine, the Coliseum, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We concluded our first day with Mass and a tour of the Catacombs of Callixtus.

Our hotel, the Grand Hotel Olympic is on Via Properzio, 2A 00193 Roma, and is a short 1-1/2 blocks from St. Peter’s Square. Dinner this evening was at a local restaurant.
